How do I play it?

(+2)(-3)

I'm seeing a few too many praises here not gonna lie, this does not live up to the hype in my opinion.
A game should be a game first and foremost, this is not a game this is an arg. This is the same complaint I had about shipwrecked 64. There is no game here, this is barely an interactive experience. If a game like this actually came out on the n64 it would have performed terribly and would have been remembered as one of the worst platformers of the era, so why are we praising it now just because it has a horror element hidden behind some thinly veiled fourth wall breaks?
But hey, it's free, so this is a very mediocre first game at best and a big letdown at worst. I guess.

(+1)

isn't that kind of the point, you do realize that this game was made to be an arg right? it was never meant to be like an actual game that released during the n64 because its an arg, the point of the game is not the game, but the story it conveys, and it does damn well good at that, like shipwrecked 64, i understand that your preference is just a game without a story, but to me, and others, a game and its story goes hand in hand, i get you can have your opinions, and I'm not discouraging that, I'm just saying that if you are gonna criticize a game for it being an arg and you don't like arg's, then instead of criticizing it, play a game you do like instead

I wish there was a version of this on Android because I only use phone (computer only sometimes)

A great game, it was a catastrophe when the game was cancelled.

horror game

There are a lot of issues that are present with this release that really brings it down in terms of an "enjoyable game experience." To name a few:

  • Lack of downloadable executable
  • Forced CRT filter (and by extension, lack of user settings)
  • Usage of textures from existing N64 games, which is a shame considering the time gap of 3 years between the original leak and this release
  • One hit health system, which makes the already minimal gameplay very frustrating (and even more when you see a supposed health meter referenced in the pause screen)
  • Lack of putting up any kind of front / objective for the player, outside of meta ARG content. You could loosely argue collecting the silver coins as a tangible game objective but that's really it.

Otherwise, the additional puzzles and meta content of the game is really interesting and softens some of the criticisms against the actual game. The "Unity N64 Emulator" angle is a lot more sensible than "Unity for N64" as well. However, with this release, I was really hoping for an expansion upon the gameplay seen in the leaked version. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have delivered in this regard, and is rather structured as more of an "attraction" of sorts than an actual game. Ironically, I would say the gameplay has worsened compared to the original leak, with the lack of mouse cam -- or any real camera control for that matter.

This is one of those things where its probably better off that you watch someone else play or discuss it on YouTube, unless you're interested in doing your own digging. The new nuggets of content are pretty cool and there are some great ideas here.

I had to stop playing due to the overwhelming filter and obscene amount of chromatic aberration made my already sensitive eyes strain. Even if it was for added immersion, why does an emulator require a filter you can't turn off?

(+1)

A fun caw-mputer game. Very cool

(+4)

I really wanted to enjoy this, but the fact that the coins reset every time you die makes me not want to continue, especially considering how annoying both the controls and enemies can be as well as the fact that you die in one hit.

Please either stop resetting all the coins when you die, or put in a health system like Mario 64.

Aye, that would help a lot...

why is nils face nonexistent

This is so hype. And it works on Mac <3

(+1)

Oooh I remember this Catastrophe Crow 64. I played it about 2 years ago

I strangely found a debug room filled with water. There's an area with a button that drains the water. Why does this room exist?

How'd you get there?

(1 edit) (+1)

On a rare occasion, you can go through the tv screen underneath the flowers. It leads to a debug room. Looks like this

Very cool!

(-1)

WE ARE SO BAAAACK

(+5)(-1)

i love this game but i think you should change the crt filter it doesnt look that great

What's wrong with it?

(+1)

idk to me it looks kinda distracting and jarring especially in full screen, i think shipwrecked 64 has a better filter imo

Fair. I think it's fine though, adds to it for me

Maybe make it something you can toggle? seems a lot of people don't like it.

Possibly, I don't see that being added though considering there is no settings menu or anything. A lot of people seem to hate it tho so I'm not sure how that's gonna go lol

(+4)(-3)

why is this really crappy crt filter forced over the game

What's wrong with it?

(+1)

The game tries to imply you're playing the game on an emulator, which wouldnt make any sense with the low effort filter put over the entire game

(+1)

Maybe the player is playing the game on a crt display in-universe?

I feel like that's intentional though, it's supposed to be like you're playing on an old school display

(+1)

Even if that was the case, the filter doesn't make much more sense when you realise the screen is shaped like a concave display and not a convex display

Ehh. It doesn't bother me personally, but yeah I can see why it's annoying.

why is it canceled?

It's a cancelled game in-universe, and this is supposedly a dump of the N64 ROM.

Game does not launch on Itch io Desktop

I notice some path with wrote of chipper as hidden sentence.

And I remember to write this image message has found here.

As a big "CATASTROPHE CROW!" fan, I have to say that this official release of the game is weird, but in a good way! Some parts of the game just feel odd and out of place, sometimes even downright creepy. This is definitely a real treat! The game is loaded with content, and in a way, feels like more content than we have seen before. There is even an entire factory dedicated to the 'production' of the plushies that were actually on sale! I could tell you that I could have explored this for hours on end and examining every bit and detail about each level and environment. It is truly filled with a huge amount content!

It makes this game feel even more personal to Manfred. I can tell that judging by the later levels seen in the game that this was a much later build of the game when Manfred started working on the game by himself in complete isolation, or somewhere close to that time, because of the new content added. I could say that the game was probably in a beta stage at this point during development, and if one thing's for sure, this was DEFINITELY not a 'pre-release candidate'. Either an early beta, or a late beta. Probably more an early beta.

The only problem I have with the game is that the controls are a little bit iffy in some parts pf the game as you can tend to cling off the edge of platforms and some surfaces very easily. In my opinion, the controls need work in some areas to add just a little bit more polish. But even with all of the game's flaws, there is no denying that this is the definitive "CATASTROPHE CROW!" experience for anyone who is/was a fan of the original video.

Thank you Adam and OPUS Legacy for getting this out there!

This was definitely worth the 6-month wait.

Please add support for more controllers. All I can do with my Steam controller is walk and pause.

A while ago I found some older version of CATASTROPHE CROW! That it seems like a real Catastrophe while i was playing it:

The game is very similar to Manfred's and almost symbolizes his story, out of all of this though, the most eerie thing might be that the house in the game is an actual replica of Manfred's house in N64 styled graphics, yhis game symbolizes the pain of Manfred losing his daughter.

Manfred is thought by many people to have committed suicide, jumping off of the boat shown in the game with computers stolen from the office weighing him down.

(2 edits)

Another thing that i saw:

The release date kept being delayed, and work stopped in 2001 due to the release of Nintendo's (then) newest gaming system, the GameCube. Because of this, all the staff was laid off and Manfred disappeared, making the game lost forever until someones found a copy of the game and it was the same thing of the Manfred's suicide, the pain and death of her daughter and there was blood, but the only things is discover, that Catastrophe Crow was a real Catastrophe when someone saw that mysterious and scary version of this lost game...

BUT HEY, THAT'S A THEORY, A GAME THEORY!

THE CROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE CROW IS REEEEEEAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(+3)

Honest opinion: This kind of has the problem of the Petscop playable version where actually playing it kind of reveals how artifical and empty it is, because it's not meant to be played, it's meant to tell a horror story. That said, still very cool to have a playable version--I was just kind of hoping it wouldn't be literally the same thing as the videos.

(1 edit) (+3)

While I haven't seen much yet, I can safely say this: after deliberately hopping into one of the secret areas at the start, it certainly doesn't seem to be exactly the same. There's actually something new here...

But yeah, we can't expect this to suddenly start playing like a Banjo Kazooie game or anything, as much as I'd love to see some collectathon elements fully realized here 😅

I disagree on this, I believe the emptiness adds to the horror aspect and plays well. All opinions of course, but I feel this is pretty different then the videos in a great way.

(1 edit) (+1)

Yeah, I agree with you. The emptyness sort of adds to the ambience. This is not only an out of universe horror project but an in universe beta. My major issue is the clunky controls, fitting for the time period, but still more annoying than anything.

(+2)(-1)

really wish the controls was better, it's kinda hard to platform and solve puzzles with such bad controls

(1 edit)

I'm pretty sure it's meant to control kinda bad, like actual Nintendo 64 games lol

actual nintendo 64 games would let me move the camera up and down and zoom out without needing to stand still, not really an excuse

I agree that there should have been better camera movements, but it does feel pretty solid on an actual N64 controller

(+1)

Why is there no download I can't use my N64 controller with a browser please provide a download.

you can use ds4 or a similar software to rebind the keys

Oh thank goodness

You really shouldn't put an actual image of a N64 controller on there. You know how draconian Nintendo is these days.

(+1)

These days?? They've always been that way lol

Let"s go!

im doing my part

(+3)

Can we download it?

sadly no

(+3)

can't be good for preservation!

(1 edit) (-1)

Can't we just download the site and run it that way? That's what I did.

(+1)(-1)

Is good, but uh... would enjoy some more... ah, right-hand controls. Is awkward being right handed for these. Please add arrow key support?

(+2)

arrow keys also work already though

(+2)

It already has arrow key support, it's just not described in the controller layout.

(+2)

ah

Say, does it support a PS4 Dualshock? I only see the buttons from the Xbox layout, so I'm a bit unsure here.

(+1)

I'm using mine just fine.

Ah, swell!

(1 edit) (+5)(-1)

IT'S OUT!

...and on browser? Uh, odd move, but alright. It does prevent decompilations from prying schnozes, at least. I uh, I hope it's compatible with a PS4 controller actually... And goddammit, why is the text in this whole page so dark with a pitch black background, I can barely see what I'm writin-

(+7)

y no actual download, I don't wanna have to play in browser

IT IS OUT!!!!

(+3)

oh my glob.

omg this game is finally about to release, I've been waiting for over 2 decades for this moment! (not rly lol, still really excited for this though)

can i play on this?
